Partnering with Asian Improv aRts, the Stories in Motion project gathered and presented the stories of residents of Chinatown Community Development Center’s Ping Yuen and other affordable housing buildings. The composers, musicians, choreographers, and dancers created the original work based on interviews with residents. Performances were presented for the residents in their building’s community rooms. Utilizing spoken word poetry, traditional and contemporary music and dance styles, the multidisciplinary performances sought to honor the lived experiences of diverse residents and foster deeper relationships amongst residents and staff.
Dancer and choreographer Lenora Lee says “I am honored to be working with the Chinatown Community Development Center to integrate the history and experiences of low income and immigrant communities. Through struggle, discrimination, perseverance, hope, courage, envisioning and manifestation, these communities thrive have made countless contributions to Bay Area and beyond.”
