Cambodia Town in Long Beach, CA is home to the largest population of Cambodians outside of Southeast Asia. In December 2018, community members received news that two retail plazas in Cambodia Town were proposed for redevelopment, threatening to displace long-standing immigrant owned small businesses and cultural institutions. In the time since, community stakeholders have galvanized to form Cambodia Town Thrives, a collaborative group working to create a community-driven plan that holds the City of Long Beach accountable to social and racial justice when reinvesting in their community. Led by community stakeholders serving on the coordinating team and advisory team, Cambodia Town Thrives engaged residents, business owners, nonprofit leaders, parents, and youth to determine the guiding principles and potential community projects for equitable development and reinvestment into Cambodia Town. With the Cambodia Town Vision plan as a foundation, Cambodia Town Thrives is building empowered community leaders that will lead and engage in City planning and economic development. Community residents and businesses will lead on rezoning, housing element, establishing a community land trust, investing in youth programs, and business development.
