Nisei Week

A festival with deep roots

Nisei Week Foundation

Los Angeles, CA

Grand Parade goes through Little Tokyo as part of Annual Nisei Week Japanese Festival celebrating Japanese American culture and history.

Little Tokyo’s Annual Nisei (meaning “second generation”) Week is a celebration of Japanese and Japanese American heritage and traditions in Southern California. The very first Nisei Week was held in 1934. This summertime festival includes displays of Japanese arts and culture, exhibitions, music, entertainment, food, and activities for all ages. The culminating event is the Grand Parade, featuring dancers, musicians, floats, and organizations from both Little Tokyo and the wider Japanese American community. It is a shared childhood memory of so many Japanese Americans who grew up in Southern California.
