Azusa Street is a barren alley but critical pedestrian connection in Little Tokyo. In 2016, Sustainable Little Tokyo hosted two pop-ups to reimagine this alley as a functional public space for the neighborhood. This included everything from installing temporary murals, adding greenery and trees, providing street furniture for people to rest and socialize comfortably, and activities welcoming of all ages. These pop-ups gave the community a chance to make this space truly work for them, and demonstrated what this space could one day look and feel like.
