This mural features the stories of the Japanese American community that was once thriving in Montavilla and east Multnomah County. The role of Japanese Americans in shaping the development of east Multnomah County and Oregon’s agricultural industry is underrepresented. Many images of this history were lost during the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, or to flooding in the area in 1948. This mural seeks to honor those who have tilled the soil and laid the groundwork for future generations.
